I am just back from England.
I had a hard time to find bed and breakfasts or small hotels for £30 or less, often I heard that £50 was the minimum but the Lonely Planet England did help, (traveling alone in the smaller towns of the northwest.)
Dinner can still be anything from £5 to £50 per person, lunch slightly cheaper. If your hotel/hostel does not do breakfast, add an other £5 to £10 a day.
I would say that you will need £50 per day if you stay in the few cheap hostels and self cater, travel little and do not much sightseeing, (only the free things.)
£ 100 a day will give you ample money for moderate sightseeing, dining out and a few nights in the pub.
So between £1500 and £ 3000 will do if you are careful. It is not hard to spend about £6000 in one month.

i just came back from spending a month in Italy with a study abroad program and spent near $2000 and almost all of the meals were provided and the hotel was included in the program cost so i didn't have to spend that much on that. i would say bring at least $4000 to $5000 if you want to experience everything that london has to offer. Also you have to think of the conversion rates for every dollar there is almost 2 american dollars
