Because of our anti-Soviet paranoia we didn't realize that Islamic extremism was a much bigger threat. Maybe we should have let the Soviet kicked Mujahideen butt!

Hey - The Soviets tried for 9 years...

They actually warned us that we would never be able to succeed in Afghanistan.

I can't even begin to understand the logic of this statement. If the Mujahideen in Afghanistan had been defeated by the Soviet Union then the Saudi Arabian Islamic extremist would not have attacked us on 9/11? And the Soviet Union was a super power and a real threat to our survival. Islamic extremist are a real threat to annoy us but hardly to destroy us.

The irony of your question is that it is true that preventing Soviets take over Afganistan would have prevented 9/11.

I say irony because there's a lot of irony in that. Reagan administration was so focused on eliminating "evil empire" that it hardly saw any other objectives in foreign policy. While it's true Soviet "threat" was by far major concern to us, there were also other geopolitical trends that his administration did not see or did not want to see.

The Iran-contra affair itself shows how much of our democratic beliefs we were able to sacrifice in our zealous war stance against Communism. That statement should explain why we chose to violate international law and to wholly support Afgani insurgents with all-kinds-of-weapons only for our children to die from the same weapons we supplied them previously. The last statement is a literal statement as they fired to us with our rifles.

What would have avoided 9/11 would have been our not preventing the world from stopping Israels human rights abuses for decades, our not putting into power or supporting every brutal oppressive government we supported, and our acting like a civilized country, rather than greedy, brainless, brutes.

The entire wolrd would be better off.

No one has ever occuppied Afghanistan for very long. Alexander the Great held it only a few months. The British tried and failed. It was called Russia's Viet Nam. The US will be expelled when it is finally decided to be too costly.

So, basically, you are saying these two situations are the same: One bomb goes off and kills 11 people -terrorism-. Soviet Union invades USA bombs cities and kills 1,000,000 people. Yea, the terrorists are REAL THREATS to your safety.

Hindsight is always 20/20. Of course, if we had just let Hitler take over the world 9/11 wouldn't have happened either.

Maybe if we wouldn't have CUT AND RUN it wouldn't have happened. After all they were a DESTROYED NATION and needed someone to put SOME LAW in place. It didn't matter to them that they weren't big supporters of the law, what mattered was that they had something in place. Someone provided order.
