My visit to the Grand Canyon was by car and I did travel through Las Vegas on the way. A friend and I stayed in the little town just outside Zion National Park and made day trips to Zion, Bryce Canyon National Park and the north rim of the Grand Canyon. You can see a 360° degree panorama I shot there for one of the early World Wide Web events at the first source link below. (Check out the full screen version - most impressive)
The north rim is much less crowded (I'm told) than the south rim where most of the commercial tours from Las Vegas go.
I later put together a section for iNeTours.com on Las Vegas where you can find information on tours to the Grand Canyon including bus, helicopter and planes. As others have stated there are many ways to purchase these tickets including storefronts on the Las Vegas Strip.
If you do go to Las Vegas I highly recommend visiting the nearby incredible Valley of Fire Nevada State Park.

You will love the Grand Canyon, which can be seen from Utah or Arizon side. Both are fantastic.
McCarren Airport is right in the middle of Las Vegas and the international airport in the area.
Grand Canyon in Arizona is near Williams AZ, where I believe is the closest but small airport you could catch a commute airline from Vegas. From Williams you can take a really kool train ride to the Canyon!
Flying over the Grand Canyon is fun and you can even take a helicopter to the bottom of the canyon. TRY www.gcflight.com OR www.grandcanyonhelicoptersaz.com for prices and information. If you want to spend the night at the bottom at a very nice motel you MUST make reservations for flight and motel in advance.

When l was in Vegas, l did a 1 day trip to the Grand Canyon,
it included round-trip pick up from the hotel, flight to the canyon with 3 hours on the ground, & lunch, for $158 per person. Most of the hotels in Las Vegas have tour desks and can arrange trips throughout the area. If you google something like "Las Vegas Side Trips" you can probably find several companies that offer these tours.

There are tours from Las Vegas, but Phoenix is the closer airport and you drive up 17 to the Grand Canyon. You shouldTake a side trip to Sedona and Tucson.

I have been 3 times, prepare 4 times next month. Phoenix is closest big airport, or if you want to fly to small airports( william, flagstaff), but the ticket is much more expensive, from william, you can take grand canyon train to south rim for $65, if you don't drive.
Fly over canyon, the cheapest is $99 for 20 min.
