Only a couple of people got the point of my question. I don't actually flip burgers. Why don't we drug test politicians?

This is a great question. People who don't give it much thought might say that drug users are a risk to any business but that someone who rises to a high enough level to be capable of achieving the Presidency could not possibly be a slave to drugs or alcohol. Hmm... But it's hard to take that seriously when we now have a President who used to do cocaine and didn't conquer his alcoholism until his 40's. Now that we know there is a huge problem with prescription drug addiction it makes it even harder. Should the people demand a drug test before the general election? The thought makes me giggle but it might be a rational request.

Loving all of these vehement anti-drug answers. Anyone like to offer a nuanced answer other than "JUST SAY NO!"? I wonder how many of these people smoke or drink. Should smoking cigs be illegal at businesses, should drinking off the job be prohibited by these businesses?

Millions of otherwise law-abiding citizens use drugs (including alcohol and tobacco) in their lives and that should be their business.

My answer is that you shouldn't have to for a job like yours. If you're careless enough to let substances interfere with your work then you deserve to be fired, but innocent until proven guilty is the standard in the country, or at least, it's supposed to be. With the exception of certain industries where sobriety is absolutely essential (like driving), I see no reason for private businesses to be doing this without prior evidence.

This is becoming a standard part of the hiring process anywhere. They are testing for drugs.

The President isn't as important as the guy bringing my fries. It's an egalitarian thing.
