the harddrive crashed I have the restoration disk but when I put the disk in it takes my to dos with A:// I am not sure how to go from there? what do I do? this computer is for my 7 year old, I cannot afford a new one

The important bit is "X:\setup"
type C:\setup and it should install.
edit* sorry, that might actually be D:\setup - just goes to show how long it's been since I installed Windows 98. As I recall, the letter for the CD ROM is changed temporarily when you first install.

find out what letter is assigned to your cd-rom drive.
typ c: then enter and see if the prompt changes to c:/
if an error message appears try
typ d: then enter
when the prompt changes to the new letter try
typ dir then enter
you should see a listing of files and folders
one of the files should be setup.exe
if that is the case
typ setup then enter

if none of the above apply you need to get a startupdisk.
try this website http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm
put the disk in and start the computer with also the cdrom in the drive and try the above commands again.

type setup click enter & get ready to put your 98 disk in

A:// and then u have to give the specific file u are looking for
type dir it will list u all files in there.
