Think of a product, like breakfast cereal. With kids, advertisers will appeal to the visual (a cute box or character) and taste. Maybe they'll offer some sort of prize. They also appeal to fantasy, like being in Froot Loops Jungle, or whatever. With moms, they'll appeal to health concerns (10%less sugar!) or price concerns. Another example might be cars or cell phones. Older target audiences want safety, economy and ease of use. Younger people want lots of gadgets and a "cool" look.

One of the best examples is the variety of Geico commercials. I can't think of all of them, but they use the gecko, the cavemen, the older celebrities, the YouTube dudes, etc. They are trying to reach a wide range of people.
