This is a non-fiction book by Truman Capote. You need to read the parts about Smith's life before the crime. (Some of this is in the interviews he gives to Capote.) Decide if he was "a bad seed" or if his early life made him that way. Also, a nurturing relationship of sorts develops between Capote and Smith. Smith begins to trust Capote and open up more. There are two excellent films about this relationship: one is Capote, and the other, less known, I think is called Truman.
Watching one of these will help you SEE how the nurturing worked.
