b. 6
This is because the sum of any two sides of any triangle has to be greater than the remaining side.
5 + 3 is 8, which isn't greater than the other side (which is 8). That rules out answer a
5 + 8 = 13, so the answer can't be c(13) or d(17).
b is the only answer that works because:
5 + 6 > 8,
6 + 8 > 5, and
5 + 8 > 6

The answer is six, but not for any reason other than this:
The third side of any triangle must be less than the sum of the other two sides (13) but greater than the difference between the other two sides (3).
Therefore, the third side must be GREATER THAN but not equal to three, and thus cannot be three, and must be LESS THAN but not equal to thirteen, so it can't be thirteen of seventeen. However, to use the pythagorean theorem to prove this problem is incorrect, because the Pythagorean theorem only applieas to right triangles, and the only way this triangle could be a right triangle would be if the third side equaled 6.245, which it obviously cannot, because that's not one of the choices.

i could have sworn you add the two sides and divide by 2. so if that is the case. 5 + 8 = 13 divided by 2 = 6.5 so i would say 6. go with the closests answer.
