I have lived in mainland China for almost five years. There is no secret to this. Most Chinese hate Japanese. There are some exceptions but mostly it is a widespread and cohesive feeling of hatred.
The Japanese invaded China in 1937 and used every form of atrocious behavior to crush the Chinese spirit and eliminate opposition. That war is never called World War One by Chinese. It is "The War Against Japanese Aggression". I have asked many Chinese what they think about the two atomic bombs dropped on Japan and with no exceptions they say it was a good thing. Ask any native of mainland China about the Nanjing massacre and you will get an earful of Japanese hatred. As quick to forgive westerners (excepting perhaps the British who often hate the French), we fail to grasp the fact that the school teachers, TV programs, books and movies in China perpetuate the hatred. At the same time, the Chinese government strongly criticizes the Japanese if their leaders visit any monument related to the war or fail to mention the atrocious behavior of their own soldiers in school textbooks. The hatred is much stronger than that of Jews for Germans.

Yes, like all people the Chinese, Japanese and Koreans have racism associated with them. I don't have a clue how wide spread this is or if they are working on it as a culture. I have meet a number of Chinese who are prejudice against the Japanese and Filipinos, but again not sure how representative this is. The orientals have a long history of mutual wars and atrocities.
