I assume you are asking for the STAR Sirius
(don't know what a stra is ;-) )

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sirius

the answer is the "Dog Star"

<> Ok... I like this Q so I will continue the answer...

to ask WHY a star is named something (in this case Sirius does not mean DOG, but it is from the Latin Sīrius, from Greek Σείριος which means "glowing" or "scorcher") is to wonder what the people doing the naming saw in the sky (think cloud pictures, only they never change). The greeks saw a dog in the heaven's and called the constellation "Canis Major" or big dog... since the star is the biggest star in the big dog, it becomes the "dog star"

But we can't be provincial in assuming the naming is universal... (throw THAT one up in your class)

for example:

In latin the name is Canicula or "Little dog"
In Arabic : "The Leader"
In sanskrit: "The Deer Hunter"
In China: "The Celestial Wolf"
In Japan: "The Blue Star: (very original that one)
In Norway (this one is my favorite): "burning done by Loki", or "Loki's torch" (I LIKE that one)

Why is it the dog star? Because it's the brightest star of the constellation Canis Major-- the Big Dog. Another name for the star is Canicula.

As a follow-up on Arkalius's answer: the reason we talk about the "dog days" of summer, is that during the hottest part of summer the constellation Sirius is prominent in the sky.

And for harry potter fans......the dog star is the reason J.K. Rowling named a certain character Syrius Black (he can change into a dog.)

Alpha Canis Majoris, because it's the brightest star in the constellation Canis Major

IT'S CALLED THE DOG STAR BECAUSE IT IS PART OF THE CONSTELLATION CANIS MAJOR. IT'S ALSO THE BRIGHTEST STAR IN THE NIGHT SKY.
