Assuming in year A costs were 10,000. Then you buy the same exact products, in year B (after 10% inflation) your costs become 11,000 even though you still bought the same items and had the same inputs. Inflation (assuming uniform throughout the economy, which is not realistic) also works on your profits. If with your 10,000 costs you made 12,000 gross income and 2,000 profit, you would likely be happy if you raised prices and increased your revenue to 13,200. However, in a 10% inflation environment, you can buy only 12,0000 worth of stuff with your 13,200. The purchasing power is 1,200 less. Therefore, your profits of 2,200 looks like a gain from 2,000, but you actually stayed flat. In reality its much more complicated. Your capital goods and food may be increasing faster while your wages increasing slower. Your customers may not be able to afford a price hike, so you must make less profits in this inflationary environment. Any savings in cash are being depleted of purchasing power at the rate of inflation. The calculations can be very difficult and complex.

Obviously 1908 pennies as the value of the pound has, steadily (but sometimes a little erratically) fallen over the years.
There are several entries on the "net" which will give you an approximate answer.
If you wish to debate the value of an old penny (240/£) to a new penny (100/£) I think you will get the same answer.

you need more info there, have an example of what they can buy in case your prof is being tricky. more then likely 1908 pennies are worth the most because inflation has been taking place in all of those years, just think of what pennies were worth back then, you could buy all kinds of crap.
