I do not think there is way to stop Firefox updates, since Firefox updates itself automatically. Firefox updates, however, take up very little space. So if you are having any trouble with speed. Firefox is not causing the problem. If you are downloading anything then you might want to stop that. You also might want to check your recycle bin. If those do not work you might want to get new software.

there is a button at the bottom of the screen telling you that there is an update that you can click and firefox will not update until the next time you turn the computer on so you don't have to install the update until then.

Why on earth would you want to block Firefox updates?
Those updates are for very good reasons, usually to do with security issues. I strongly advise you to continue with updates, otherwise you are going to have some very serious problems, and you won't have to worry about speed any more!!

I think there is a skip button, and anyway the firefox updates are tiny so don't bother.

You can disable the auto-update in the options.
However, they update it because of security holes, so I would not recommend it.

Yeah, you should be able to go into the options menu and disabled automatic updates.
Or when it asks you, there should be somewhere within the dialog box that you can click to disable it as well
