Try putting the sentence another way:- Chillingworth studies Dimmesdale's condition under the pretext of helping him, but he is really trying to examine Dimmesdale's mind.

I am not completely sure, but I think the verbs should be in the past tense: "Chillingworth STUDIED Dimmesdale's condition under the pretext of helping him, but HE WAS really trying to examine his mind".

change pretext to pretense

C studies D's condition under the pretense of helping him. C is really trying to examine/study his mind.

Why fix it? It is correct grammar and conveys (I suppose) the thought you want. MS Word is not the supreme arbiter of grammar. It proposes some outrageous 'corrections' to sentences more complex than 'See Jane run.'
