Reading maps etc. is not at all the same.

A good test is if you are crossing an open body of water at night in the fog. Even on land, in open country if the fog limits how far you can see, you will find that it is tougher than you thought.

Two other fellows and I got caught in a blinding blizzard at the Cactus Flats Atomic Range years ago. With the aid of a crude compass ( had to take it away from the vehicle to get a reading, and it only showed north in a little window on a theodolite) we finally intersected a road that was well enough developed to show through the snow. We spent 14 hours out there before we found civilization.

Not really! But I have an almost perfect photographic memory, I can remember everything in detail, so I have never been lost in my life. I can go anywhere anytime with no fear that I will be lost. People depend on me. Especially if I have the map of the region lol

I can read a map really, really well. Which is a great cover for my terrible sense of direction.

Actually I do. On the way from Dublin to Portrush we got a bit lost and started going around in circles!!
"Haven't we passed this Tesco before?"
So I took control and got out the map, insisting he listened to where I was telling him to go. Next time we passed that Tesco was on the way back.

i learned a long time ago that the sun always rises in the east and as the day goes by it slowly moves clockwise south and then west to set. so when it sets if i turn to my right im' facing north and turn right again i'm facing east and so on. i travel alot so this serves me well and i always make a mental note of landmarks and their location east, south.west, and north. this serves well on cloudy days. sounds complicated but it really isn't . im' no rocket science major so if i can figure this out any one can.
