During the week, I work 60 hours so my place becomes a disaster because I don't have the time or energy to clean up. I just throw things on the couch when I come home and I go to bed because I have to be up in 5 hours. My place is not dirty, just really messy with tons of clothes, papers, a few dirty dishes and what ever is on my couch piled up. I know sitting on the computer is not helping matters. I know I need to clean but I'm also trying to put it off because I just don't know where to start.

I do this..Ask your self what is making you so stressed? From your comments I would say the couch is. So pick up everything that is on the couch take to where it belongs. Now get cleaning materials together start in the rear of the house working clockwise go around the room dusting and putting things away as you go things tha should go to the other end of the need to go in a basket or something so yousave steps and don't get side tracked do not answer the phone if you have to do laundry let a load wash while you are working move on to the next room making sure there is no dishes left in other parts of the house do bathrooms same way working to the kitchen. Now either load dishwasher or if you don't have one fill the sink put dishes in to soak while you wipe counters , table, frig ,sweep and dust. Now the kitchen will be clean and the dishes are easy because they have had time to soak. when you are finished and your house is clean sit down and try to come up with a plan to keep it clean.
1. straighten up at night..no dishes left dirty
all clothes put where they belong.
2.When you get up to go to work go to the bathroom , make bed, get ready, eat ,rinse dishes use sponge w/dishsoap to wash now you come home to a clean house "NO STRESS" Relax, clean up after yourself as you go when it becomes a habit .you won't even remember feeling so overwhelmed.

First time round sorry, you have to bite the bullet and pick a spot and keep going until you finish.

Once its all in order you need to start doing little things so it never gets back to a disaster. The things I do that help are:

Basket where all used clothes collect so i have only one place to take them from to the laundry.

All dish's get washed as I use them, dried on food is so hard to get rid of, also if you do it as you go it takes minutes.

Nominate a place where to store other objects like paper so its not a chore to collect them when your cleaning.

Good luck, and I hope you get through it.

If you live alone I can see how hard it is. If you can afford it, hire a cleaning company one time to clean EVERYTHING just once then it won't be so hard to keep up.
