To be a great inventor you need to be able to spot things that people will say were obvious - once you have pointed them out; and see needs that people don't know they have.

Take a really famous modern inventor and his invention the Dyson vacuum cleaner. Vacuum cleaner bags clog and so reduce efficiency so having a cleaner that doesn't use one is (many would say) obviously a good idea. It's obvious isn't it, or at least it is now Mr Dyson has pointed it out.

Who needs to carry their entire music collection around with them. No one except maybe a DJ in past decades, but now we have mp3 players that can store your entire music collection and we all need one.

most people will say imagination ....... but wrong!!! what you need is dedication, hard work and almost obsessive behavior; most inventors worked their whole life just to invent one or two things, they usually had messed up love lifes, or none at all. Thomas A. Edison is one of the most prolific inventors, once was asked this question, "what it takes to invent something?" do you know what he answered? he said "10% inspiration and 90% perspiration" so be reay to sweat!!!

My husband is a serial inventor and he has no qualifications.
Contacts and know how are only needed when you want to start patenting and selling your product.
It all starts with a good imagination and a sharp eye for a gap in the market.
My friend recently invented "My Wee Friend" - if you go on www.supernanny.co.uk and look it up she explains how she came up with the idea.

By definition: a person who invents, esp. one who devises some new process, appliance, machine, or article; one who makes inventions.

However, to be a famous inventor you have to patent and actually sell your invention to people. Sell enough and you'll be well known or even famous.

Very subjective question.
