Don't go crazy buying them loads of stuff for Christmas. I agree that educational toys are awesome and so are books. Just remember that almost everyone in your family is going to get them a toy or an outfit. You will wind up with so much more than you will ever need.

A stuffed animal. They are only a year old, I don't think they are going to be able to grasp the concept of Christmas.

Books....specifically the ones that the pages can't be ripped out of. Like the hard cardboard books. Most kids at that age love to look at picture, turn pages...plus is helps them to learn.

If this is for a friend or relative's baby, a really good gift for this age is a Baby Chaleco performance bib. They are totally yank-proof, look like cute little tops, and are practical because every kid this age can use a good bib.

Maybe I am a cruel Mom but we decided to save $$ our daughter's first Christmas and bought her some balloons which she loved. She was too young to understand gift giving and receiving so we figured it was the perfect time to save. We will be buying her lots of gifts for the rest of her life!!

When my son turned one, we just got him some things that were age appropriate, and didn't spend too much either. Toys can cost so much and they seem to grow out of them just as fast as they grow out of clothes sometimes.

A walking / ride on car. Kids that age love them.
