Just run Norton and it has found a dialer. It says it can't remove it and it has to be done manually. Anyone put me in the right direction? Have run anti dailer software but this hasn't picked it up.
its located in my btyahoo system file

There are some malware things which are difficult to remove. They're designed that way, be happy that Norton at least picked it up. Often they start automatically when Widows boots up and run in the background doing their nasty stuff. Norton (& most others) can't delete a running program.

The first thing to be sure of is that it isn't the dialler used by your ISP when you are in 'dial up' internet. If you use dial up internet then you won't want to delete that. Also, consider if it's really a problem - if you're never connected to a dial up modem then it can't do anything.
Set a System Restore point before you do anything. Just in case of ... well, you know.

From the Start Menu select Control Panel, then select Add/Remove programs. Scroll down the list and see if the thing Norton picked up is there. If it is then delete it.

You could try starting your computer in "Safe Mode". It's a bit fiddly to do but won't do any damage (hence the name). Read on and be patient, I'll try and talk you through it.
When you boot up your machine you see some messges apprear on the screen before Windows starts. If you're quick you'll see one to Start in Safe Mode. Hit the named key before the message goes and wait.
If you missed it then keep tapping F10 (or F8 sometimes) as it's booting and you'll see the Safe Mode screen appear. You can't miss it as it's labelled in each corner.

This has now started a Very Limited set of the Windows operating system. Malware does not run under these conditions. Now run Norton Again and it should delete the nasty program.

Also make sure that you download Windows Defender (free from Microsoft Update site) and try Spybot Search and Destroy (also free, google for it). Use them to scan very regularly. These malware programs run in slightly different ways and together can pick up nasties which individually they may miss.
Good luck.

Yes - my Norton find one of those as well - but as it is called something like 'btweb###.xxx' and is in the btyahoo system I assume it is part of the btyahoo operating system and if you remove it you may well find that your internet connection or some part of btyahoo stops working.

If you read the Norton/Symantic website article which you are directed to after a scan finds the dialler you will see that a generic dialler can call premium rate numbers to pass information about your surfing habits - check your phone bill - do you have lots of premium rate calls - if not then I suggest you do not have a problem.

Alternatively you could just delete the identified file - and if every thing keeps working let me know and I'll try deleting mine.

Hello,

(ANS) Here is another very trust worthy tool that should be able to remove such malware. Downloading a copy (its freeware) of SpyBot Search & Destroy, its a VERY good program and will detect and remove nasties that other programs often miss. Once SD has detected something it can normally remove it safely and that includes malicious files and malicious registry keys, etc.

**NOTE:- it is good package but the scan is not fast but it is incredibly through though. Its worth using this tool as it can winkle out malware other scanners cannot.

Heres the website address for SD (see below)

http://www.safer-networking.org/

Hope that helps?

Kind Regards Ivan
