Bruce springsteen wrote it and released it in 1973.
It was a more acoustic, folk type tune in its original format.

Manfred Mann's Earth Band did a harder Rock cover in 1977, and it was a huge hit ~ reaching No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Springsteen's original lyric was "cut loose like a deuce".
Manfred Mann changed it to "revved up like a deuce".
They also omitted parts of the verses and rearranged the order of the remaining lyrics.

Personally, I can't stand the original, and LOVE the cover!

Mannfred Mann.....actually i found a site that said Bruce wrote it.....sorry......or is that 2 different songs....hold on...ok..here's how it is....Mann's version says 'revved up like a deuce' and Bruce's version says ' cut loose like a deuce' because his label wanted it to rhyme more so he changed it to rhyme....I'm guessing they both can be credited?
