Ok, I cant go messing around with my pipes and whatnot, but I do need a filter. I live in a town where we had a chemical leak that contimanated the water, and ever since then it smells and tastes horrid. I dont even feel safe doing my dishes in it.

Can you make some suggestions please?

P.S I had no idea where this question should go. Maybe people in apartments could tell me what they use, or landlords could tell me what I could use without having to install this and that..?

It might help if you know what is contaminating your water. Then you can check the various filters to be certain that the one you choose is effective for that particular contaminant.

Britta and Pur both make filters that mount on sinks. They are about the same. Some are small and sit on the spigot, while some have a counter-top unit and a hose that attaches where the aerator screws in. I haven't looked into these lately, but if I remember correctly, they work with cold water, and are not advised for use with hot water. You might wish to check.

If the city hasn't placed a ban on using this water, it is probably safe for washing dishes and such. You might also look into bottled water. You can get dispensers that will provide both hot and cold water of much better quality than you'll get from the tap.

Brita makes some filters which attach to the end of your faucet spigot. However, do not feel unsafe if your water is supplied by a municipal water system. There is NO WAY a municipality would provide unsafe water to the residents. I'd venture that the supplies are regularly tested after this chemical leak to insure that they are fit for use.

Brita. It's ALWAYS a good idea to install a filter to your faucet, especially in older bldg. where the pipes could be very old. I use Brita and or PUR. They simply screw on to your faucet and I have to replace the filter every 3 or 4 months. Good luck and safe drinking.
