The term "Seven Seas" has been in exiostence since at least 2300 B.C.

Traditionally, the Seven Seas referred to prior to the 15th century are:

the Red Sea
the Mediterranean Sea
the Persian Gulf
the Black Sea
the Adriatic Sea
the Caspian Sea
the Indian Ocean

However, "Seven" was not always literally the number 7 in ancient Western culture. Sometime, "seven" was used to mean "several" or "many". From time to time, the "seven seas" were changed to include one or both of the following:

Aegean Sea
Arabian Sea

Seven Seas was a phrase in many ancient literatures including the Greeks and Romans; The number seven has magic in many traditions, and we still consider it lucky. The "seven" seas were arbitrary and changed over time, depending upon the part of the world and the period of time. However, they were usually seven out of the following list of nine bodies of water:

Adriatic Sea
Aegean Sea
Arabian Sea
Black Sea
Caspian Sea
Indian Ocean
Mediterranean Sea
Persian Gulf
Red Sea
