Not to worry about it. Blockage & infection are the known complications of shunt surgery for hydrocephalus. It will not cause any brain damage. To get rid off ventriculoperitoneal shunt there is one procedure called ' ventriculostomy' in which surgeon put the scope in the ventricles and with fogarthy catheter or some other instrument remove the obstructing membrane. But for this the baby need to have obstructing type of hydrocephalus. This is permanant solution to the many obstructing type of hydrocephalus.

A guy I went to school with wasn't a preemie, but he had Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus too. He had to have shunts put in every few years. He didn't have any brain damage. The thing with preemies is that they have a hard time finding tubes small enough to do the work they need to do. My son was born almost 3 months early and while he didn't have to have any surgeries, he had a lot of tubes put in and they had to search to find the right size....especially when he needed to be catheterized. I hope the surgeon Can give your baby some relief.

Your neurosurgeon is right to put a shunt in, as it will drain the cerebrospinal fluid that is normally absorbed. It will probably need replacement throughout your little one's lifetime as he/she grows. Hydrocephalus, if left untreated, can cause brain damage and developmental delays. Just know the signs and symptoms of fluid build-up to prevent any problems from occurring.

If the neurosurgeon seems confident about it, I'm sure your baby will be ok. Dr.'s rarely give false hope. I don't think this condition has any long-standing effects.
