The reason I can't ask my mother is because she died. I never knew for sure who my father was. I would like to know if my brother and I have the same father but he is unable to tell me. My brother's father recently died and left an estate. I also wonder if I am an heir.

Yes it can, but obviously it can't determine who your father is, only that the same man fathered you both.

Yes, DNA can determine if you have the same or different father. Why do you want to know? Just because you don't look alike doesn't mean you have different fathers. There are many sets of genes in all of our ancestors. You can get any of those.

Yes. Women only carry X genes, so therefore since the Y gene, of your XY, is only inherited through fathers, lineage can be determined within all the male lines of a family as they share the same one.

definite, there is an Autosomal DNA attempt which will practice this connection. Autosomal DNA is the DNA recent on your non-intercourse chromosomes. Y chromosome is handed from father to son and Mitochondria is handed out of your mom, those are out of your intercourse chromosomes. So get an Autosomal DNA attempt to make sure your relationship.

I am sure it would, they would check genetic markers the more that are the same the greater the probability that you have the same father. It would require a sample from your brother also. And father if possible.

What difference does it make knowing you brother is really your brother or not. What matters is he's been with you all this while and you should have developed affection for him. I hope knowing the results won't change that! just remember.
And yes DNA test can determine.
