Since 50 overs cricket is of one day duration, it is called as one Day International (ODI). However, 20-20 cricket lasts only 3 hours and 25 minutes break and cannot be called half day cricket or 3 hours cricket. Hence it is called 20-20 cricket.

50-50 match takes a days time so it is called one day international
whereas a 20 over match does not take much time

because 50-50 is internationally standard, so it needs a standard name. 20-20 is an improvisation of 50-50, so it has no specific name YET. there may be a change in the future.

It is because it sounds good and cannot be called as ODI because it takes less than one-sixth of the day
