I think it is Archie. He played in an era when defense ruled. A QB had to be very mobile to have success because the OL couldn't use their hands to block. I don't think Peyton is quick enough to survive the kind of rush he would face. Archie would be great now, but Peyton wouldn't be great then. Whatcha think?

Man, only an idiot would compare passer ratings from the 70's to now! It is a totally different game that has been changed to help offensive numbers. Throw passer rating out the window. It is useless except for fantasy football.

Archie Manning was the only MVP ever from a losing team!

Not to mention that the DB's would jam the receivers all the way downfield then, and you can forget about going down the middle - they would get clotheslined!

Peyton isn't as good as Favre, and I really like Peyton and the whole Manning family. I'm just telling it like it is to educate you guys.

They are both great. The guy who said Eli was better than Archie better not say that in Oxford, Mississippi - he will get killed!

Archie was a better scrambler, it's the only area where he'll be consider better.
Forget stats, now an average QB like Kerry Collins have better stats than the two top QBs in the 70s, Staubach and Bradshaw.
The argument that Archie did not have a team is bad. Both came to sucky teams with no defense, that's why they were taken high in the draft.
But the big difference is that Manning turned a 3-13 team into a playoff team the next season. And the Colts only had one losing season since then.

It's clearly Peyton. Back in the 70s, I didn't hear any of this talk about Archie possibly the best QB of all time. Now, Peyton and Tom Brady are in that discussion. Archie wasn't the most mobile QB either. And he wasn't good enough to lead his team to a Super Bowl. Peyton always steps up in the pocket and finds extra time to throw.

Archie is better, are you "stoned" Stonewall, you got to be kidding right. His son Peyton is way better than that old dude Archie, i know Archie play in an era full of great defensive teams but Peyton would still pick those team apart with his passing skills. Peyton all the way, oh your Sooners will win the Big 12 and be the front runner in the BCS title game but my USC Trojans is still alive but i got to see how they gonna do in their last 5 tough games. If they go 11-1, USC will be in the title game for sure.

Archie Manning had the misfortune of playing for a team that was far from talented,Peyton Manning at least had receivers on his side, but head to head,Peyton Manning not only is better than Archie, but when his playing days are over will be the best quarterback ever to play the game, bar none
I think you have been hitting too many walls made of stone with your head, you need a bye week

omg. dude do you even watch football? omg archie manning wasnt even the best quarterback named manning to play for ole miss. i think if archie played in this era he would be mediocre at best. defenses are bigger and faster and more agile. their defense schemes are a lot more complex then. now lets take peyton planning in that era. have you ever heard of dan fouts? he put up a lot of huge numbers then playing in don correll offensive system. peyton manning could have played then and no offense to archie would have had a better career. didnt peyton manning beat the Patriots and the Bears last year to win the Super Bowl? Last time i checked those were 2 pretty damn good defenses last year. Hell figured out a way to beat them.

Are you nuts? Peyton Manning has over 38,000 passing yards and Archie had like 20,000. Peyton Manning is also a 2 time NFL MVP and Super Bowl Champion and MVP. Archie was never NFL MVP or never even got to the playoffs.

OK never saw Archie, but based on what you are saying and going by yeah you have a point. Peyton can't stand up to a strong rush, that is a proven.

Are you really implying that the defenses during Archie's era were as fast as today's defenses? Peyton Manning is not only better than Archie, I'd wager than when he retires, he'll be considered better than EVERYONE.
It's hard to compare QB's from different eras, but when Manning played for Tennessee, he was fairly mobile, he's simply good enough to adjusted his game to compete better in today's NFL.
