It was difficult because my mother died when I was a baby but my daddy went home to his parents and I was raised by him and his family. My grandmother was the only one I couldn't bond with. My daddy, uncle, and grandfather were the most honorable men I've ever known. I lived on a farm with all adults, no playmates, so I invented my own imaginary family...sat in the car with my dolls and took long trips. Walked the farm looking for four-leafed clovers. Told my problems to my daddy's hounds. Had a chicken for a pet till my grandmother roasted her. My childhood made me tough enough to overcome whatever life tossed my way.

Happy in the home, scary in the blitz, cold in the air raid shelters and damp smelling of damp concrete, I will always associate the smell of wet concrete with the war years.
