"Tangerine by Edward Bloor

Summary: A summary of Edward Bloor's novel Tangerine, about a visually impaired boy who moves with his family to a town in Florida, and who comes to discover how his eyesight became impaired.

This story starts out when Paul Fisher and his family (mom, dad, and Erik, his mean brother) moving from Texas to Florida to a town called Tangerine.

When they got there, they realized that the location of the house is very bad because of the constant thunderstorms, and foundation that is termite infested, and the muck fire.

After they unpacked, Paul went for a tour in his school, Lake Windsor Middle School. Mike Costello is introduced, along with Joey Costello, who later would become an important character.

After that, he went to the soccer team, later, the coach said that because his mom turned in a form that says he is visually impaired (called the IEP form). Nothing else interesting happens that day.

The next day however, Erik told his family that Mike Costello got killed at practice because of a thunder. One thing to take notice later is that Erik and his friend Arthur (also an important character) were happy of the incidence, and was laughing and making fun of Mike. Only Paul found out.

A few days later, while Paul is at his school, something big happened. Like an earthquake, later, people told him it's a sinkhole. It apparently, opened up and is swallowing a lot of classroom into the ground. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured, but the damage is big. A big portion of the school is badly damaged. The emergency relocation plan was that he'll go to Tangerine Middle school (fortunately, without the IEP) now, Paul can finally play soccer again.

In Tangerine Middle School, many people are introduced. That includes: Theresa, Victor, Tino and Henry. They are all the school's soccer player. Paul also made Joey to transfer to his school with him on the phone. As the story goes on, Paul had some soccer games, and their team became undefeated. Erik also had some football games.

As the story proceeds, Joey starts to get sick on the new school, none of Paul's new friends likes Joey, and Joey thought that Paul is as bad as the other people. Joey finally went back to the other school, naturally, dropped out of the soccer team too.

Also, some complications includes robberies around the neighborhood, it happens when housed are being tented (that means using poison gas to fill the house the kill the termites and put a tent over it, obviously, the people had to move temporarily.) And the robbers just break in the window, with gas masks. Luis is also introduced. He is the brother of Theresa and Tino. Luis is a worker in his farm field. He developed a kind of fruit called Golden Dawn. One day, Luis went up to Erik, and Erik instructed his friend Arthur to smack him with his blackjack. Luis was fine after the smack, but the affect will come later. A few days later, Luis was found dead, and only Paul knows what really happened, but the other kids suspected as well.

At the senior award night, when Erik was getting his award, Tino and Victor showed up and beat Erik and Arthur up, right in front of all the audiences. Paul himself also jumped on one of the coaches to save Tino from the coach's grab. The two of them escaped, and Paul ran back to his house. When he was at the front of his house, he had a flashback from his childhood, on the day his vision got damaged, he realized it was his brother that did it, and he sprayed paint in his eyes, and that his parents been hiding the truth from him (they told him it was that he stared at the sun eclipse until he was half blind, they lied because they don't want him to hate his brother)

After that, mysteries starts to unravel, his mom found a gym bag, and in it are all the stolen things from the neightborhood. Erik confessed it was he. Police also arrested Arthur for the murder of Luis. Paul also got expelled from his school, and his mother decided to take him to a catholic school."

"Theme
Look back through Tangerine and choose what you think is the most important word or concept from this book. Don't just choose the title or a character's name — choose a word that is actually in the book that you feel sums up what the whole book is really about. Share your reasoning with others. Did any of you choose the same word? Explain the insights into Tangerine 's theme that your choice of most important word offers.

Conflict
Paul fears his brother's physical retaliations, is angry at his father's apparent favoritism toward his brother, and resents his mother's apparent inability to see Erik for what he really is. Erik, therefore, appears to be the root of Paul's problems. Is this true? Is Erik the main conflict that Paul faces? If Erik is what caused and continues to cause Paul's problems, what caused, and perhaps continues to cause, Erik's problems?

Setting
Paul's subdivision was built on a foundation of termite-infested ground, next to a field that constantly burns muck fires, near a school that is built on land that becomes a sinkhole. In what ways is the setting of the town of Tangerine a metaphor for Paul's life? What is it that eats away at Paul's foundation? What fire burns constantly in Paul's life? What is it in Paul's life that collapses just as the ground collapses into a sinkhole?

Symbolism
The volunteer firefighter on page 15 says, "Muck fires don't go out. They're burning all the time.... Sometimes the rain'll damp them down, but they're still smoldering." What is Paul's muck fire that is always burning? What are the muck fires for Paul's parents, for Erik, for Antoine Thomas? At the end of the book, the wind has shifted and the odor and smoke from the muck fire is blowing away from Paul. Is that symbolic of what has happened in Paul's life?

On page 244 as he digs in the ground behind his home on the day of Luis's funeral, Paul admits that he is finally seeing things that he has never seen before. What can he now see on page 244? What is the dirt of his life that was "burned, buried, plowed, coated and landscaped?"

Characterization
Choose one of the following characters from Tangerine: Paul, Erik, Joey, Theresa Cruz, Vincent, Mr. Fisher, Mrs. Fisher. Create a scrapbook that this character would have made. Include artifacts mentioned in the novel or inspired by details in the text. Under each item, write a brief paragraph from the character's point of view that explains why this item was included in the scrapbook.

On page 268, is Paul right to tell his father that the issue is his father's eyesight? Is Paul the only one who sees things clearly? In what ways are Paul's parents blind? Is his mother still blind to Erik even after she discovers the jewelry he has stolen? Are Paul's friends at Tangerine Middle School blind? What about Joey? Is Erik blind or does he clearly see the choices he is making?"
