There is no shortage of good free firewalls. You can divide them in to 2 basic groups. The first group of firewalls require a lot of user input and the other does not. When your computer trys to make a connection to the Internet, the first group of firewalls will prompt the user, asking if the connection request is safe. Therefore, these firewalls effectiveness is only as good as the user's ability to differentiate what is safe and what is not safe. The first group includes: ZoneAlarm, Sygate and Commodo firewalls. These are best suited for those who are computer savvy.

In the second group of firewalls, the firewall program does all the decision making. There is hardly any user input. This group includes: Sunbelt Kerio, Outpost and Microsoft's Firewall (only in Windows XP and Vista).

I found the best firewall in the first group to be Commodo. As for the second group, I recommend Sunbelt Kerio.

You can find all these firewall programs at http://www.filehippo.com/software/firewalls/

I'm only going to add one comment to this. Never - under any circumstances - would I use Comodo. I downloaded and installed it early this year, and it took it a month, and the threat of a lawsuit, to get instructions on how to remove it - it screwed up my computer so bad.

I have Windows XP and use Windows' firewall and don't have a problem.
