If the service is bad, I leave a penny on the table, or I don't leave anything at all but I might say something to the manager of the restaurant before I leave.

Also - if you feel that your waiter/waitress is not giving you good service, then you have the right to request a different one. I've done it once or twice.

If they came running after me to say that I didn't leave a tip, I would tell them exactly why. You provided terrible service, so I provided a terrible tip....none.

When I have had terrible service, I generally don't leave a tip, but I will leave a brief note explaining why to the server. It will generally say, no service, no tip. The last time it happened, I wrote a note on the napkin. The server refused to wait on me, but she would serve my husband. Unfortunately for her, I was paying the bill.

If a waiter or waitress ran up to me and indicated that I had not tipped, I'd tell them to fetch the manager, so they could both hear the explanation.

If you don't tip, they conclude you forgot.

What you do is leave 2c as a tip. That's what's known as "putting in your two cents worth." If you're really unhappy with the service, they'll understand exactly what you mean.

I normally leave about 15% for a tip, for average service. I leave at least 20% if the waitress has been especially attentive about refilling my drink, etc., and if she puts on a big smile as if it were her pleasure to be hospitable to her customers, instead of acting like she has a sore back (which is probably true), her shoes are killing her (which is probably true), she's worried about her kid, who's apparently started using drugs (and maybe she's actually worried about something else about her kid), and she's frustrated because she hasn't had a date except with jerks in the last six months (which, I'm told, is a common complaint.)

And if I'm only getting a cup of coffee and a donut, I may well spend far more on the tip than on the food, because it's not fair to punish the waitress because I'm not hungry. She only has N tables to take care of, and I'm using one of them up.

There's a story about the waitress in the diner who takes the money off the counter, sticks it in her apron, and turns to find the owner glaring at her. "What a wierdo! Comes in, gets a $5 order, leaves a $10 tip, and then walks out without paying. I guess it takes all kinds!"

But being president and leader of the free world isn't the toughest job in the world. Being a good waitress is. And I do my part to make sure that great waitresses can't afford to quit their jobs, and lousy waitresses can't afford to keep theirs.

I dont eat out often, but it usually depends who I am with. If its with male friends, then I would most likely skip the tip. If its with a female friend then I suddenly become generous lol. I care less about the service, more about the food lol. If the server is clean and has a pleasant personality I might tip.

Tipping is based on the server doing THEIR job. Which is good service, checking back with you, taking your order in proper time, and so on. If the food is poor, that is the chiefs fault. If the server is not doing their job, then NO they should not get a tip. If they are running after you saying you didn't leave a tip?? hmmm?? I would talk to management, they shouldn't be running after you, and explain to management of your dissatisfaction of job done.

It is considered proper to tip, even if just a small "token" amount. It should be a personal choice, but a lot of folks want to eat that that establishment again, so grumblingly leave a tip. On the few occassions that I have had bad service, however, I did NOT leave a tip.

If the service is REALLY bad and I don't want to tip, I usually just leave an insultingly small amount of change on the table. That way, they realize I didn't just forget to tip and hopefully they'll get the message.
