I was born in 1948. My first book was Bambi. It said in the forward 'this is a delicious book, savor the taste of the words and digest what you have read equally in this and all books.'

All great reads. I read the Bambi book when I was in the hospital at 10. Lady in the next bed loaned me the book to read. Since then I have read well over 100,000 books by my count and am continuing today. Only read about 400 books per year now, I have slowed down considerably.

You read more than a book a day? My word man, I can barely manage my life by striving all day.
My first book was Bambi, as well, then I started the "Red Fox" series that I loved! I read "Florence Nightingale" series for a time.
i'm sure you're the most literate man I know!
Nice to meet'cha! Juju

The first "adult" book I ever read was by Martin and Osa Johnson about their adventures in Africa during the late 1800's and early 1900's up to about the 30's.
I was probably 11 or so. The subject matter was so exotic and fascinating. I went on to read their other books over the years and enjoyed every one. I think they are out of print now but can occassionally be found in a library or on a booksellers website.
By the time I was 12-13, I was hooked on Robert Heinlein science-fiction....especially his "Marian Chronicles"...then Arthur C. Clarke and Isaac Asimov.
I came from a family of readers and picked the habit up at a very young age. My mother never censored my reading material and was always there to answer any questions I might have about what I was reading. This led to a life-long passion for books.
I will read almost anything. Probably kill 2 a week if it's good fiction.....but also love biographies, history, government, etc.

The first full length book I remember reading... a REAL book... not one with a lot of pictures like they have to use for High School seniors in the U.S. today.. was "The Wizard of Oz" and I was about 8 years old when I read it so that would have been in 1948

I didn't start reading until 6th grade. I got my first library card so started getting all the books I was allowed but they were picture books not novels. The librarian stopped me one day and told me I read too much for those books and told me to take from another shelf, I think she gave me "Of Mice and Men" I know she did once. I read the entire little house series that year. I started reading all day everyday for years. I was tested in 7th grade because a teacher thought I couldn't read but by then I could read just not geography of the western hemisphere books.

I was born in 1941 and I absolutely loved to read from six years old on. I still read an enormous amount every year. I remember reading the Bobbsey Twin series, all of the Nancy Drew mysteries, Granny Fox, and then when I was thirteen years old, my aunt let me read her Gone With the Wind book ...all 1300 pages and more. I was in love with that book and read it every summer until I went to college. I enjoyed Silas Marner, the Deerslayer, Raisin in the Sun and on and on and on. Reading is such a joy!

I remember my first real book in gr7. It was Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, Heidi followed that and then Robinson Crusoe. In Gr8 I remember reading Rudyard Kiplings' The Jungle Book ,I loved it and I became hooked on reading.I find that since I have become older I read more non-fiction now . I envy you ,having the time to read when you want.
How did you make out on Google Earth!

Thie first chapter book I remember is Mary Poppins in about the third grade. There may have been other books before but that one sticks in my mind. Reading allows us to paint the picture in our minds and has so much detail a movie can't provide. I'm already planning for a magni screen should the day every come I can't read and of course talking books.

I am sure it was "Little Women". My friends and I were all Nancy Drew fans. We exchanged these in elementary school. I have my mother's movie copy of "Gone With The Wind" that was published when the movie opened. The photos of Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable are beautiful.
I too liked the Bobbsey Twins series at a very young age.

I can't recall which one I read first. My parents bought us a lot of books, some of the first were the little Golden Books when I was a kid. I loved to read and I esp. liked Nancy Drew and the Bobbsey Twins. I've always loved short stories and we had a couple books that came with our encyclopedia that was full of them. I'd read those stories over and over.
That's great that you love to read so much and continue to do so. I don't read as much as I used to, but it is a fun way to 'escape' for awhile.

Gee, I can't remember the very first one! Good for you, Wally for doing so! ;-)
The Nancy Drew series I most enjoyed...somewhere around 3rd grade I guess?
Jane Eyre was the first I remember delving into that was not necessarily fodder for a kid...I enjoyed it, though not understanding all of it....read it again several times thereafter with the last time a couple years ago. My oh My - much more in that book that my young mind at 10 could fathom! lOL
