When I was at school I was determined I would be a successful hairdresser/beautician and one day have my own salon but after I qualified in both I gave up. This was because I hated the salon I worked in and with each day my confidence decreased. Sometimes I miss it but the thought of going back into it (after 7yrs) fills me with dread so at least I know I made the right decision. The problem though - is the fact that since then, although I am generally happy I have no ambitions - I feel like I'm plodding along! I'm happy when I have something to work towards but I don't have anything to work towards anymore and that bores me! Help!

That's sad... another wasted life because of a lack of self discipline...

Doesn't bother me... if you are happy with your existance, that works for me.

No, you're not the only person with no ambition. Go hang out at a welfare office for a while, you'll see what I mean. It may not be that you don't have ambition, it may just be that you haven't decided what you want to be when you grow up. I'm in the same boat and I'm 55! So, you know what? Get a hobby. Get out and get some fresh air and exercise, go ride a bike, go to the park and watch the children laugh. Do something to remember how it feels when your spirits are up. Then stop and think about what you would like to do next. Have fun! If you want to go back to the beauty business, do it, but have fun with it! Tell jokes, sing, dance, a little comic flirting with the guys, "I really dig bald heads, can I shave yours?" Attitude is 90% how you look at yourself and 10% the faces you make when looking at others. Go forth and enjoy.

ok this is an honest opinion
if u have no purpose in what you're doing, can you tell me what exactly is the point??
whats the point if you're just going along, without any purpose, without something big to look forward to, one day?

according to me, it does matter [mainly because i havent even achieved my ambitions yet, and sorry if you didnt wanna hear that].
maybe your confidence decreased because maybe being a hairdresser or a beautician wasnt exactly your thing. maybe it wasnt something you have great passion for. u may be happy, but there's no purpose behind what you do.

the tragedy of life doesnt stand in not achieving your ambitions...it lies in having no ambition
just find something that makes you happy when you do it
something you love doing and have great passion for

of course is it matter. You have to have an ambition. Why? Because, although you don't realise it, it can make you work hard to get your ambition, and you have to have your own targets too. It make you know what you have to do. Start from simple things first.

and, do you have another hobby? If yes, you have to improve it! Or, I think, you better back to your job as a hairdresser/beautician, because, in our life, there is of course many problems. Don't let the problems stop you. Fix it, and start again.

In my opinion you gave someone else power over your dreams. You gave up because you hated working at that salon. If it something you want everyday when you go to bed and when you wake up it something worth fighting for. If it is not, put it back in your memories and find something else that lights the flame. Get out of your comfort box and try something new. The only way you are going to find something you want to work towars is by getting out there and doing it. Take baby steps and see where it takes you. Get your power back over your dreams. It is a very big world out and all you need to do is let yourself have the adventure. I am doing that now. My dream is to get back in the military. I started out at 230 pounds. I changed my eating habits and then started exercising. Do you know how hard it is to get up at 4:30am every day to exercise before the rest of my family wakes up. Then I have to go to work and do everything else that goes on in my household. I have 30 pounds left to go and I am not giving up. I getting my power back. Hope this helps.

sometimes not having the ambition you think you should have is not the same as having no ambition and motivation and ambition are not the same thing...I think you are motivated to achieve what you want but your wants have changed as you have grown wiser
