Actually my wife and I are raising our seven year old grandson. Our son, the father, is an alcoholic who can't keep a job and the mother is an addict who can't take care of herself. The mother has never been a part of our grandson's life, although we have encouraged her to communicate with him. Our son chooses to have minimal contact with his own son.

So our roles are being mother, father, grandmother, and grandfather to our grandson. You may find in your research that there are many families like ours. We would rather the child's parents step up and take responsibility, but it is not to be. The alternative to our taking our grandson would have been foster homes. We could not let that happen to our only grandchild. After all, he is a part of our family.

I think grandparents' roles in the development of a child is everything.
The way they act, they way they talk, the way they do things, etc.

Just as kids learn from parents, some can learn from grandparents, too, if they're staying over or if they're being looked after by the grandparents. And certainly, taking care of the child for the parents if they're out will greatly be better than the child being left at home by him/herself.
