I'm glad that you mentioned mechanical as a primary aspect because it can be much less costly then say electronics. Anyway here is what I suggest. Consider that anything which senses a condition, and in response does something, is by definition a robot. A wooden cart that gets to the edge of a table and stops for example. My local library has a whole book of such projects; be sure to check yours. Most stuff can teach basic ideas simply by use of wood, and string, and rubberbands; easy household stuff. When your ready start looking at the Arduino pic-processor. This would be the electronic side, but it is open-sourced meaning, lot's of people have shared their ideas freely.
