The Greek letter is SUPPOSED to be pronounced "fee" (as students of Greek are taught).

Otherwise, people follow the "normal" rules for English rules, and make it rhyme with "eye". This is how you should pronounce it when referring to a fraternity or the like. (e.g., Phi Beta Kappa, as has been mentioned). Also if you use it (or any other Greek letter) in math and science.

Same rules apply for all the other Greek letters spelled with a final i -- xi, pi, chi, psi. (note esp. "pi" in mathematics" is pronounced "pie".)

In Phi Beta Kappa, it is a long i, rhyming with eye.

It is also pronounced fee in math
