Seijun Suzuki is the last of the old guard still living and working. Great auteurs from the younger generations would be Takeshi Miike , Shunji Iwai and Takeshi Kitano.

I only recently discovered Japanese movies, and have seen two (both manga) that I thought were incredibly beautiful. One was 'Princess Mononoke' and the other was 'Grave of the Fireflies'. I'm not sure who directed them.
