There is only one at any given time.

In Tibetan Buddhism, the successive Dalai Lamas form a lineage of allegedly reborn (tulku) magistrates which traces back to 1391.

Between the 17th century and 1959, the Dalai Lama was the head of the Tibetan government, administering a large portion of the country from the capital Lhasa. He is often styled "His Holiness" (HH) before his title.

(Living in exile in Dharamsala, India - since 1959)

He has a website:

His Holiness is a Tibetan and carries the name of the ‘Dalai Lama’. Tibetans place their trust in him. Therefore, his third commitment is to the Tibetan issue. His Holiness has a responsibility to act as the free spokesperson of the Tibetans in their struggle for justice. As far as this third commitment is concerned, it will cease to exist once a mutually beneficial solution is reached between the Tibetans and Chinese.

Your question is too involved and will take a book to answer. You should do some searches and research on the internet. However one really brief and true and proven event as to how someone becomes the dalai Lama.

When the Dalai Lama dies, a group of Buddist Monks in Tibet, go on a hike. This hike can cover hundreds of miles. They just know which direction to go in, how far to go, which house to stop at, and every time, in the house they stop at there is always a new born baby boy, born at about the same time that the Dalai Lama died.

This is just a fact. One of those strange but true and observed phenomonen. But anyway that is how the new Dalai Lama is found

- who is the Dalai Lama?
A spiritual leader for the Buddhists (and not only them).
He's believed to be an incarnation of Buddha.

- why are there so many of them?
Once one Dalai Lama dies, another one is 'chosen'.

- what did that person do to become the Dalai Lama?
I've heard that once a 'new' Dalai Lama is born, he's got some special abilities - for example, a child Dalai Lama can point Buddha's things among some other stuff without a mistake, but I bet there are other ways to prove a child to be an intarnation of Buddha.

The dalai lama is the Buddhist spiritual leader of Tibet. There is only one dalai lama. The others held that position previously. When one dalai lama dies another is selected to replace him. I believe that the present dalai lama is the 14th one.The sites below will answer your other question and more.
