We had accident that tap water from laudry room overflowed our entire unit and it also wet my downstair neighbour's one of the bed rooms. We felt very sorry so apart from telling him how sorry we are numerous times, we hired carpet cleaner/specialist to remove water, hired fan dryer for 3 days, bought him carpet spray in case if it smells, and also re-laid carpet to ensure everything is ok. The carpet specialist told me it's absolutely fine and nothing damaged. My neighbour today knocked our door and said he will bill me for his wage because he coudln't work for 1 and half day. whereas we only saw him had half day off, and when I ask him why is it 1 and half day, he can't even answer me.
Will you pay him his wage? He was repeatdly saying that he'd bill me whenever he saw me for last 5 days and he never even said a word to tell me how sorry he is for damage in our place. He could let the carpet dry alone and goes to work instead of having a day off valuntarily. What do you think?

Here is his bill
2 pillows $40,
Bedside table $50,
Envelopes $10
Wages $252 (He intially tried to bill me $375 then dropped after I asked him why he had to take 1 and half day off)
I already told him politly that I am more than happy to pay everything but the wage, but he seemed very unhappy and my wife is bit worried as she doesn't want to meet angry neighbour in stairway.

He asked me if I wanted to see all the things that he is going to throw away because of the accident. When I went to his place to check them out, he had stack of 6 boxes near dooraway. As they looked quite heavy, I offered him that I will help him carry them to gabage room. Where I found out that those 6 big boxes were all just empty as we cutting the boxes to put them into to recycle bin. I don't understand his behaviour as we were smiling each other and sometime had small chat in the doorway we thought he was a gentlemen.

By the way I don't have insurance. It's our mortgage and my neighbour is renting.

Thank you for your response

You were obligated to repair the damage, so you only did what you were supposed to do. You aren't legally obligated to do anything more, but you should have offered him something for the inconvenience you caused him. He's probably upset you didn't at least make a gesture. I would have given him a gift certificate or fifty bucks toward a nice dinner out. That's probably why he's inflated the claim for lost time. If he takes you to small claims court, his chances of winning are pretty slim. He would have to show documentation from his employer that would have to coincide exactly with the times outside workers were actually in his home, and even then, many courts do not award damages for lost time.

Still, you don't want a neighbor holding a grudge. Try to work something out. If you can't, tell him to take you to court. The odds are in your favor. Most cases are brought in the first place because the responsible party would not pay for the damage, and the claimant asks for lost time on top of actual damages. Here, you actually did what you were supposed to.

Sounds like this neighbor is taking advantage of you, you should only agree to pay for only what time was actually lost which you said was only a half day, technically he does need to stay home for a whole day as the windows need to be open for a whole day to allow facilitation of drying the carpet so one day of work wages should be appropriate, but really you did pay for more damage that you needed to do so you was being more than fair to him don't let him take advantage of you as far as wages go one day should be plenty anymore and you are being taken advantage of Good Luck !

First off, You owe him NOTHING!!
He is using you for "FREE DAYS" Seems as if every ones out for a free lunch!
I hope you have insurance, Renters or home owners?
If you rent you May need to contact the management of your building.
I would get a hold of your Insurance company. That way if he ever decides to sue they have attorney's to take care of everything.
DO NOT PAY HIM A DIME!!

I dont think of you're in charge for her dry cleansing bill. You presented your carpet device, she declined. She took it upon herself to get the rug dry wiped clean. i would not supply her a stinking dime in the direction of that bill. and he or she became into stupid for throwing the comforter away. It purely mandatory to be washed. there is not any way she could make you pay the bill in spite of if she claims she is going to take you to small claims court. injuries happen and it appears that evidently like she is being a ***** with regard to the entire element!

You have done and paid more than enough.
He is being greedy, he could have had them on a weekend, or made arrangements to have someone there. Forget it; Let him sue, I doubt he could win after all you have done and paid for.
He is lucky he got that, after all it was an accident .
His homeowners should have paid for it, (and maybe it did, and he is collectling twice).
