I've read some site say 55 or 60mph. What about 40, 45, and 50? What is the real phyics behind this? I was thinking that driving at the lowest speed in the highest gear (automatic transmission) is most efficient.

the lowest mph my car can get in the highest gear or overdrive is 45mph. If my speed drops below that it will downshift.
