Are you having some sort of problem that you feel that you need to use the martingale? Frankly, anything that comes between you and your horse, hinders. You can actually simulate the action of a martingale if you need to with your hands, but you didn't even mention why you were even considering using one. If you have an issue with your horse and his head set or collection, try to use your hands to simulate the action of the martingale, as you know that was used on him in the past. You don't have to have the aperatus to perform the same function...and, my philosophy is: "If you can't take it into a show ring, then NEVER use any gimmic (and that's what they are, substitutes for hands) over 2 wks.

Running martingales are very gentle, because they don't hold the horse's head in place and they allow him to put his head up somewhat; they just keep him from throwing it up or putting it too far up. Since they are so gentle it won'y hurt him to use one, plus since he's used to it you'll be fine. Are you sure you need one though? Since you didn't have any thoughts of using a martingale before you saw these pictures you might not need one. Ask somone knowledgeable who can watch you ride and help you decide. I would NOT recommend a standing martingale; I find them too severe and too much of a training aid, which a running isn't because it doesn't hold the horse's head in place. If you end up using a martingale, make sure you get rein stops to prevent the martingale's rings getting tangled in the bit.

I doubt a running martingale will hurt if you have gentle hands and it fits him properly. Make sure that it isn't too short. I almost always use a martingale when I jump because if the horse fliped his head up when we landed I wouldn't want to get hit in the face. In addition, I prefer standing martingales most of the time, and running martingales if I'm jumping a large fence and I don't want the martingale to restrict the horses head and neck.

If he needs it, yes, if not, no. It won't hurt him if you put one back on, but my suggestion would be to only use it whilst hacking and jumping so you have that extra control, if you need it. For flatwork you do not need one and they cannot be worn for dressage competitions.

Running martingales prevent the horse lifting it's head above the point of control by applying pressure to the reins (however, I don't know how this works because when a horse puts it's head up, the martingale rings slide back down towards your hands!!).

If your horse constantly has his head above the point of control, I'd suggest a standing martingale instead but ideally these should not be used for jumping large jumps if you can help it, although you can get elasticated ones

But, once again, only if you really need it!!

There are a hundred diverse snaffle bits which you need to objective. slightly, like something, if used wisely isn't merciless on your horse. A candy iron bit will save your horses mouth comfortable, yet won't save him balanced or save him from getting stable. What you're able to be able to desire to artwork on is stability. do no longer enable him get at the back of the bit or on the forehand. purely be sure you're interior the middle of the pony and not leaning forward, hence encouraging greater velocity. Any form of martingale will purely limit the pony from raising its head.

Martingales are collection aids. Be sure to work on your hands, soft! as the martingale increases pressure on the bit.

It's not going to hurt him, martingales aren't torture devices they're training and collection aids. The fact that you're been riding fine without one for months since you got him says you don't really need one, but if he ever does begin to act as if he does need one it won't hurt him to add one on.
