When the Earth first formed, it was a pretty harsh place. Gases like methane, hydrogen, and ammonia came from volcanoes on the surface. Over time, the sun's ultraviolet radiation managed to break down the poisonous gases, leaving behind a whole lot of nitrogen and carbon dioxide.

The first land masses formed very soon after the Earth first formed, and steam from volcanoes and huge chunks of ice from space (the Earth had a REALLY weak atmosphere) that rained down on the planet melted to from the first oceans.

In order to observe the instance of the Creation of planet Earth we would have had to be there.
The Only descripton that we have concerning the formation of the Earth as we observe it to be today , is outlined in the Biblical record of Creation on the first chapter of Genesis of the Holy Bible.

The Earth at the present time is further away from the Sun than it was in the past. The Earth's orbit has expanded its orbital radius vector as per the Rules of the Gravitational phenomenon. That means that as the Earth 's mass increases in order to maintain its rotational energy equilibrium it must expand its orbital radius around the Sun.

The proof of this Phenomena is in the observation of the slowing down of the motion of the earth and the increase of the lenght of the Earth's days as Universal time goes by.
