I find all your answers rather entertaining if not, amusing. Kojak, your version of the history of the battle of Mactan is something worth pondering however, the truth is, Magellan wanted to subject Lapulapu and his fellow natives into submission, bowing down before the mighty invading Spaniards. Still, my question remains unanswered: what happened to Magellan's body? I, too, wrote for Sun-Star (Community and the erstwhile Weekend Magazine).

this has been a question even for historians. but as far as i know there is probably no accurate information regarding a definite answer.

but logically & even practically his body would have been buried somewhere in Mactan.

some people might argue that this is probably the first major battle between south asians & europeans with both sides using deadly weapons. & that would have been a real victory for the islanders & i would argue that they kept & may have buried the body themselves as well.

He was killed and chopped in pieces. There is no account of whether he was actually buried or not. But because he was retreating to the sea when he was killed, Lapu lapu's men probably just threw his chop-chop body into the sea. Magellan incensed the natives so much (the natives were pagans but he insisted that they worship the Cross) so they would not have given this bad bad bad enemy a proper burial.

Most people know that Ferdinand Magellan was killed by local natives in 1521. Few of you know “WHY” he died. To put it simply, he got involved in local politics.
When Magellan first arrived in the Philippines he was greeted with open arms by Rajah Humabon of Cebu. They exchange gifts and the Rajah even converted to Christianity. From Datu Zula, Magellan learned there was a war going on with Chief Lapu Lapu of Mactan Island. Magellan volunteered to use his superior fire power and vast military skills to resolve this ugly situation. He even invited the Rajah to watch as he destroyed their enemy. Underestimating the enemy was just one of the mistakes that led to Magellan’s death. His superior weapons were still stuck in the boats off shore when his body and inflated ego was pierced by a native bamboo spear. The Rajah tried to rescue his new friend but it was too late. The Spanish retreated in chaos. Do not get involved in local politics. You can get hurt.
As to the location of his body. I doubt it is burried anywhere. The usual procedure based on historical precidents is to hack the body to pieces and toss it into the sea. Possibly a scuba diver with a metal detector can find parts of his armor at the battle site but I doubt it as sea water is highly corrosive.

i dont know the answer to your question, but by a mere fact i know that it is not lapu-lapu who killed magellan..
actually, according to pigaffeta, it is the natives who killed magellan. their weapons are just bows and arrows so when the spaniards got into the place of lapu-lapu, where he is the chieftain, the natives dropped them many arrows that cause the death of magellan..

uhmm..just a trivia. :)

Magellan’s body probably was taken by his crew and they later chopped up his body and tossed it overboard into the ocean. it will be almost impossible to find his body or articles therefore.

Seems Humabon wanted his body and wanted to pay for it, but nothing remained.
