Quite the contrary, actually.
I kind of live in four different worlds. There's my arts work, the main purpose of my life, and I have to behave and interact with colleagues there in a multitude of ways -- smaller organizations require a laid-back demeanor, but larger ones like major regional theatre [and the four NY productions I did] require an austere and very conservative demeanor.
Then there's the day jobs I do between spates of projects, which are mostly in administrative environs and require different sets of skills and behaviors.
The last two are my friends, who mostly don't work in the arts [requiring me to be able to converse about non-artistic matters], and my family, who don't know I'm gay. Regarding the family, it's not that I'm ashamed of being gay, but rather that we've never been terribly close except via that surface congeniality. I come from a very WASPish family, and no one talks about anything personal -- it's called "being New Englanders". Frankly, I credit my arts work and extensive travelling with helping me to become the more open, communicative, and broad-minded person I am today.

funny u asked this..but we just came out with our college batch magazine and this was the most repeatedly used word to describe me by my batchmates!!
