In minerals what is/are the differences between compete solutions and solutions?
I am told that Olivines are a complete solid solutions;Plagioclase have solid solutions. Any help would be appreciated

In my mineralogical class I never heard the term complete solution. I did learn that plag and olivine are both examples of solid solution. The only thing I can hypothesize it that a complete solution in olivine means that the Iron and Magnesium can be in any ratio because of the similarity in size of the iron and magnesium ions. Plag is a solid solution, but perhaps because of ion size and differences, only certain ratios can exist. Like I said I am just hypothesizing. If I had my min book I'd crack it open. Sadly, we structural geologists tend to forget some of the smaller things.
