Two ways to find out:

1. Ask an expert to check it. Which you did, and you obviously have no faith in the expert.

2. Pay attention to the noise level and feel the air coming out of ducts to judge the temperature while the weather is mild. When the weather is very cold, see if the furnace is louder and more heat seems to come out. If you do, it is a two-stage and both stages are working. If not, it could be a two-stage in need of repair.

Two-stages run at a lower output most of the time to meet only the demand required (since the weather is mild more than it's severely cold). It uses about two-thirds of its capacity in the first stage. When needed it kicks in to the second stage.

It is more efficient than a single stage furnace, which puts out its maximum heat whenever in use. You don't need that much in milder weather.

It is probably not a two stage furnace. The technology was not around 50 years ago. If your furnace is that old, you are just throwing away money by using it. Its' afue is probably less than 60%. The new furnaces can be up to about 96%. For more info, check out the furnace page at www.hvac-for-beginners.com

A two stage furnace that is 51 years old is like claiming that you have an lcd t.v. that is 51 years old - the technology is far younger than your furnace.
