Understand in order to BE someone's best friend it isn't about being nice and spending all your time together. Thats not necarry even a friendship. What makes a "best friend" is about UNDERSTANDING!!! TO A POINT!!! To that special point were you can BASH your friend over the head because you KNOW they did something stupid. And give them a great big hug because you KNOW when they did something smart for themselves. NOT BASED ON YOUR GOALS BUT THIERS!!!!! Its actually a NATURAL progression of human relationships, typically thou most "love affairs" never make it to that point. Those that do, enjoy the benefits, because with that type of understanding you can have true compassion, passion, and companianship. Lets just say if your not best-friends, you have a problem in your ability to relate within the relationship, understand yourself, and each other...... it would actually be a sign of dysfunction within that relationship.

I'm going way out on a limb here and offering my opinion: No.
A woman's best friend can be a man. In fact, that is fairly common.
A man's best friend, cannot be a woman. Well, she can be his "best friend" - but - he will always want a little more than friendship.
Especially if you are hot.
Come on, this is a GUY we are talking about here! The two of you are out on a moon-lit beach, having a great talk, and he's thinking: "Yeap, she's just a good friend."

Certainly, and many of the best mating relationships start out as good friendships. What the people have in common and how honestly they communicate is much more important than their genders.
Even if one or both of the people involved are married, they can still have very close friends of the opposite sex. The only problems that can arise is if one or both do not have an adequate sex life (and are of the age where this is an issue), complications might spring out when least expected.
Single individuals could do a lot worse than having a best friend of the opposite gender.

Invariably one or the other will find qualities that attract you both more and more.
I'm not saying it isn't possible but it would seem difficult.
If one side is married or both, it could be upsetting to their partners in some way.
If both of you are single then the question entering your mind would be....why doesn't he/she find me attractive
It would be nice if this were possible but that is not how nature works.
If you really click with a man and enjoy his friendship it is simply the stepping stone to more.
Unless you both hold back and pretend that everything is allright, at some point it will become strained.
Not sure if any of this makes any sense...lol

I completely agree with vijay k. In order for a man and a woman to stay as best friends only at least one of them must find something obnoxious about the other.

Sure, why not? I would like to think that if I ever get married the woman will be my best friend.

But I think having a good female is wonderful.

OF course Man and woman can be best friends,, for good. But they should know their limits as friends not to go beyond especially if both or one of the parties is married. I guess you dont want to hurt his/her wife/husband or you have to see to it that your friendship are known by his/her wife/husband.

Why not? A lot of my friend (girl) have a best friend (boy). Have the best friend (man) is the better than have the best friend ( girl).
