If your router only has ONE Lan port (some do) then you need to come out of that port to an "ethernet switch" you can get switches with 4-48 ports (the more ports the higher the cost).
A small four or five port switch will allow you to connect your other computer.

I assume this really is a router and not a modem! If its just a MODEM, you need a router behind it for multiple computers.

You could use an ethernet switch (basically a box with 4 or 5 ethernet ports), and one more ethernet cable. Something like this: http://www.google.com/products?q=ethernet+switch&btnG=Search+Products

Connect the PC port of your existing router/modem to the new switch (if the switch has an "upstream" port, use that).

Connect the PC and the laptop to other ports on the switch.

That should be it. Or you could splash out and get a wireless router - but in that case, make sure you secure it.

Yes. Both the laptop and desktop get connected to the back of the router. The router cable (usually blue or another color) gets connected to the modem.

The important part is the order in which they are turned on.

To get to the internet on the desktop:
First, turn off your laptop. Then turn on the modem, then the router, then the desktop...in that order.

To get to the internet from your laptop:
First, turn off your desktop. Then turn on the moden, then the router, then the laptop...in that order.

Good luck!

This is NOT a router, it is a modem. You need a router, this will have at least 4 LAN ports for the pcs.
