I have noticed on a number of occasions that if I borrow someones pen at work or when out and about some where they watch me like a hawk ready to pounce and take it back the second I have finished with it.
I borrowed a girls pen in a card shop yesterday and before I even managed to get the lid back on she yelled 'give my pen'! and snatched it out of my hand, I must have looked so startled because she instantly apologised and looked a bit hysterical.
Has anyone else noticed this? or have I just got a pen theif kind of look about me?

BECAUSE BASTARDS LIKE YOU BORROW THEM WITHOUT RETURNING THEM AND WE RUN OUT OF PENS! WE NEED OUR PENS, SO WHY DON'T YOU GET YOUR OWN YOU SCROUNGING BASTARD!

Lol! Because there are people like me who subconsciously take things! I don't know how many times at work I found a pen, that I must have taken on my journey through the office. I just borrow a pen, forget it's not mine, and take it with me. Then later I often can't remember where it came from!

If your workplace is anything like the last place I used to work, then it's pretty hard to keep hold of a pen, they always seem to disappear. That girl's reaction does seem a little strong though, I don't know how anyone could get that worked up about a pen.

I am possesive w/pens. I collect them (sad i know) and it's hard to find a pen that writes smoothly according to your writing style. People in the mediacl field will stab you over a good pen. I work with a guy paid $400 for a fountain pen made of marble. No gold or silver just marble.

I use to steal pens--my room mate and I had quite the collection and would compete to see who could steal the most pens without stealing from each other. I'm sure that we were not the only ones that did it which is why other people are so hysterical about loaning a pen.

Because ownership of a pen is a very personal thing. I couldn't believe it when our night time domestic said she only owns ONE pen. I have half a dozen in each bag and a couple of dozen in the house.

pens are very hard to keep hold of. as soon as a pen leaves your sight it disappears off the face of the earth never to be seen again. So when loaning a pen it is essential to keep it within view at all times and for it to spend as little time with the loanee as is possible

I expect they are just fed up with losing all their pens to those people who never give them back.

It's the same with lighters, some people never give those back either.
