Right now, at my job, people are putting in extra work, and other work is not being done, while a co-worker is on a 12-week maternity leave. It doesn't seem to make sense. I know it's part of the family-friendly, employee retention policies that a lot of companies have, but it can really make things difficult for the people who aren't taking those leaves.

A generous maternity leave ensures that valued employees come back to the company, rather than joining a new company later, or starting their own business. I think it makes a huge amount of sense. Especially since it seems this employee is *very* productive when she is there.

They should hire a part-time worker to help everyone with the "scut work" so everyone can concentrate on their own and the missing co-workers "specialized" work.
