The Ku Klux Klan was rather dormant after 1880 until that wonderful invention the Movie came along and in 1915 the first truly big 'Hollywood' blockbuster 'The Birth of a Nation' thrilled audiences with the sight of the KKK racing to the rescue of the heroine & her infant son. Yip Yip Yoray yelled Americans led by their racist segregationist President Woodrow Wilson and soon the Klan was reborn all across Americ`a. The Klan did well in the South but its most impressive gaines were in places such as Conneticutt, Iowa and Oregon, with loyal followings in many other states. Cities and towns elected K K K Mayors and council members and afew KKK ers nearly made it into the State House. This trend flourished in the 1920's into the early 30's.
The K K K used the new medium of Movies and then Radio as well as the press to press home the point that they were Safe Guarding America against Bolsheviks & other Anti Americans and even soft pedalled their anti black image. The Klan tapped into a frightfully American attitude, that a minority group should accept second or third lesser status and not get all uppitty about rights. K K K members even fed elderly & poor backs and other acts of 'charity' for those 'coloreds' who 'knew their place.'
What brought down the Klan in 1930s? Was it horror over their overt racism. Shock over 'organized' lynchings and beatings of ***** World War One Veterans? Fear over the Klan's message of bigotry and hate?
No - - - then as now late night comics seized upon the issues that truly anger Americans. Money scams and sex scandals. OOOOOh, Klansman So & So shagged his secretary and together they looted the pension fund. Headlines explosing scams, stuff that seems like a Saturday Night Sketch but were reality such as Members being charged the modern equivalent of a Hundred Bucks for a Klan Outfit that could be got at K-Mart for Fifteen Bucks... Stuff like that smashed the Klan drove it to the fringes of all America for as any Klansman will tell you they like all white neighborhoods and in places like Idaho and Utah that is all one will find....

The Ku Klux Klan has been active in the South, but also in other parts of the USA and into Canada. Unfortunately, their particular brand of hate is not limited to a geographical region. The KKK may have had it's beginnings in post-Civil War America, but the ideologies of hate and blame have been around in various forms in various locations at various times for millenia.
