The only facts about fog are:

1.it is caused by the suspension of solid or liquid particles in the air which reduce visibility

2. it is not fog until the visibility drops below 1000 metres (more than 1000m it is either mist or haze).

As for its affect on motor accidents this is, I am sure, far too difficult to assess.

Fog is nothing but cloud on ground.Fog is composed of minute water droplets suspended in the atmosphere near the surface. These droplets scatter the light rays and thus the visibility is considerably reduced. When visibility is less than 1000 metres, fog is said to prevail.
Fog is formed(1) when the temperature is reduced below the dew point or(2) when moisture is added to air until condensation takes place.
The cooling is brought out by many ways .Accordingly different types of fog are formed.
Ground fog:-This is commonly seen everywhere. This occurs due to cooling by radiation of energy into space.LIght wind, clear sky, ground inversion and sufficient moisture in the air are the favourable conditions for the formation of this type of fog.
Evaporation fog:-This occurs when rain falls through a layer of cooled air near the ground. Some of the falling rain evaporates and cools the air through which it falls.Condensation takes place resulting in the formation of fog.
Steam fog:-This is kind of evaporation fog in which cool air passes over a warm water surface and water vapour flows into the air from the water.
Upslope fog:-When a layer of moist air is lifted along a slope, it cools and condensation occurs resulting in fog.
Frontal fog:- This is also a kind of evaporation fog which occurs in advance of a warm front.Rain from the frontal surface falls through a layer of cold air near the surface, evaporates, and mixes with the cold air and saturates it.This results in fog.
Advection fog:-In this case, warm, moist ai is caused to flow over a cold surface. The cooling of moist air as it passes over the cold surface will result in the formation of fog.Advection fog may also form when moist air from the sea moves over the adjoining colder land. This is also called coastal fog .
If fog forms over aerodrome, flight operations will be affected.Road traffic also will be affected if it forms over road.

FOG: A FAST WAY TO MELT SNOW: In the spring, snow cover can melt rapidly if a warm, humid air mass overrides the snow and the snow then lowers the temperature of this humid air to the point that fog forms. The fog droplets forming at the snow surface release the latent heat of condensation, which helps to melt the snow.
